§ History
The Department of Pharmacy has a long history and it was founded in 1966 as the first department at Tajen Pharmacy Institute with the initial enrollment of five-year junior students with six years of study.
1992” A two-year professional training program started in response to requirements of the Pharmacy Association.
1999: The Department of Pharmacy was restructured with a two-year college program.
2000: The five-year junior students program changed to four-year college program with four years of study.
2002: In order to develop the characteristics of the pharmacy department, the study period was modified to five years of study.
2003: The Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology was established with a program of Master of Sciences in Pharmaceutical Technology to strengthen drug research and development.
2015: The Department of pharmacy was reorganized and renamed (including master programs).
2016: Started Clinical Pharmacy Section
§ Educational objectives
In line with the national health care and the development of biotechnology policy, the aims of the Department of Pharmacy are to develop skills of students to adjust and swap drugs, Chinese and Western medicine manufacturing, clinical pharmacy, pharmacy management and drug marketing and other professional knowledge, etc. The graduates also should have professional ethics, humanistic, international perspectives and be able to adapt to the environment as the goal.

The Department has a respectable team of teachers and excellent practice environments, so that students can combine theory and practical applications together.

§ Faculty
The Department has 27 faculty with doctoral and master's degrees in various fields of pharmacy, including 11 professors, 11 associate professors, 4 assistant professors and 1 lecturer. Among them, 23 have doctoral degrees with a very strong faculty structure.
§ Equipment and Facilities
In addition to research offices for faculty, there are Chinese herbal medicine science and technology research center, student practice pharmacy, laboratory animal room, professional computer laboratory and two audio-visual classrooms. In the expensive instrument room, the following instruments are built-in: 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, Gas Chromatographic Mass Spectrometer, High Performance Liquid Chromatography apparatus, Cold Light Fluorescence Analyzer, Platelet Aggregation Analyzer, Physiological Multi-function Recorder, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Enzyme Immunoassay Analyzer, Atomic Analyzer, Element Analyzer, Infrared Spectrophotometers, Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrophotometers, Amino Acid Analyzer, Expansion Coefficient Analyzer, Acidity Analyzer, Ultra High Speed Centrifuge and Dissolution equipment, etc.
§ Curriculum Design
Our school belongs to the Technological and Vocational Education System, with special emphasis on students' professional skills training. In order to provide graduates with excellent admittance to the career market, we have extended the four-year technical study period to five years since 2002. In addition to strengthening the students' basic professional courses, workplace adaptability will be reinforced in the fifth year. Students can choose different fields according to their interests, and can gain personal experience to the employment marketplaces such as hospitals, drugstore chains, pharmaceutical companies or relevant industrial enterprises in order for them quickly adapt to the career market after graduation.
They are divided according to employment objectives as follows:
‧Clinical Pharmacy Section: In addition to the general basic and professional pharmacy courses, clinical pharmacy courses are required, including drug counseling, clinical pharmacokinetics, clinical toxicology, interpretation of clinical tests, and a whole semester practice of clinical pharmacy in teaching hospitals.
‧Pharmaceutical Technology Section: This includes the technology of Chinese herbal medicine preparation, cognition of biotechnology and technology of drug synthesis and purification. In addition to general basic and professional pharmacy courses, biotechnology, industrial pharmacy and pharmaceutical technology courses are required, and a whole semester internship to pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies.
‧Pharmaceutical Management Section: Emphasis is given on the ability to run community pharmacies and drug marketing. In addition to the general basic and professional pharmacy courses, medicine management, pharmaceutical business management and drug distribution management courses are required, and a whole semester internship to chain pharmacies, community pharmacies or drug companies.
§ Employment prospects
After graduation, students can participate in the National Professional and Technical Examinations (Pharmacists) to obtain pharmacist qualification for practicing and the Civil Service Examination to obtain pharmacist qualification for government hospitals. Graduates may follow their interests and choose hospital pharmacies as pharmacists, drug companies as drug marketing managers, self-employed Chinese or Western medicine pharmacies, drugstore chain pharmacies or pharmaceutical companies engaged in pharmaceutical manufacturing or quality control. A starting salary of about NT$ 45,000-60,000 for those with licenses is 2-3 times higher than the average college graduate starting salary with chances for promotion.
